Learning Cybersecurity with AI — Real Case Studies of the Shortcut Trap in Cybersecurity and GRC

There is a growing pattern among cybersecurity aspirants and even working professionals today that is easy to miss if you are not paying close attention. Students are enthusiastic, they are active in labs, they submit reports, they discover vulnerabilities, and they present attack paths with confidence. Professionals produce structured documents, raise queries, and appear engaged in audit processes. On the surface, everything looks fine. But the moment you ask them to explain what they found, why it works, what conditions make it exploitable, or what the document they reviewed actually says, the conversation stops.

This is the AI shortcut trap, and it is quietly creating a generation of learners, and even a cohort of working professionals, who mistake information access for actual knowledge.


The Shift in How People Engage with Cybersecurity Work

There is no question that AI has changed how people learn and work. Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude can explain complex topics in plain language, generate summaries, write scripts, and walk someone through a step-by-step process in seconds. For a curious learner or a busy professional, that kind of instant feedback is genuinely valuable.


But somewhere along the way, "using AI to learn" started becoming "using AI instead of learning." Students feed tool output into a prompt, receive a formatted analysis, and submit it as understanding. Professionals feed client documents into a model and raise the output as professional judgment. They get the answer without building the mental model behind it. And in a field like

, that gap is not academic. It is career-defining, and in some cases, it is a disservice to the clients who place their trust in you.


Sharing my 2 Recent Case study with my readers that made me think and write this article. One, coming from students and another from the professional community.

Let me share something that happened recently while interacting with a group of students working on a hands-on security project. The students had been tasked with performing a vulnerability assessment on a Linux machine in a lab environment. To their credit, they went beyond the brief and discovered a vulnerability that led to privilege escalation. That is genuinely good initiative.


But when I sat down with them to discuss the finding, the conversation revealed something troubling.


I asked themWhat are the technical conditions under which this vulnerability actually causes privilege escalation?

Silence.

I followed upWhich specific package in the Linux system introduces this issue? What version is affected?

Blank looks.

Then: How do you map the CVE for this vulnerability to a client-focused CVSS score? If you were presenting this to a real client, how would you explain the actual business impact of this finding?


At that point, one of the students was honest enough to admit what had happened. They had taken the raw scan results, pasted them directly into ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, received a neatly formatted attack path, and submitted it. They had not read the CVE details. They had not looked at the package documentation. They had not understood the exploit conditions. They had not connected the finding to a client scenario in any meaningful way.

The AI had done the thinking. The students had done the copy-pasting.


A complete understanding of that privilege escalation finding would have required the student to know:

  • How Linux file permissions and SUID/SGID bits work

  • Which specific package or binary introduced the vulnerability and why that version is affected

  • What the CVE number is, how to read the National Vulnerability Database entry, and what the CVSS base score means field by field

  • How to recontextualize that base score as a client-specific rating, adjusting for whether the system is internet-facing, handles sensitive data, or has compensating controls already in place

  • How to explain all of this to a non-technical client in language that drives a clear remediation decision

None of that knowledge comes from pasting a scan result into a chatbot. All of it comes from reading, practicing, failing, getting corrected, and building understanding layer by layer.


Case Study 2: The Auditor Who Let the LLM Do the Audit


This problem is not limited to students. It has begun showing up among working professionals, and a recent experience from an ISMS consulting engagement made this unmistakably clear.

One of our clients was undergoing a certification audit for ISO 27001. During the process, the auditor raised a minor non-conformance related to the information security objectives plan. We worked closely with the client, carefully drafted a comprehensive ISMS objectives plan with clearly defined KPIs, measurement methodologies, roles, responsibilities, timelines, data sources, and references to other internal documents from which the metrics were drawn and calculated.


The document was thorough, well-structured, and every section was clearly titled. We submitted it to the auditor for review and closure.

Within one hour, the client received a list of approximately fifteen questions from the auditor, asking for clarification on tools, roles and responsibilities, timelines, measurement methods, and several other aspects of the plan.


To those of us who had written the document, this was immediately recognizable for what it was.


Every single point raised in those fifteen questions was already clearly addressed in the document. The titles were explicit. The sections were self-explanatory. The references to internal data sources were documented precisely because those sources, being internal to the client organization, would not be accessible to anyone outside. An auditor who had actually read the document would have seen the cross-references, understood the context, and either accepted the plan or raised one or two genuinely substantive queries. Instead, what appeared to have happened was this: the auditor fed the document directly into an LLM, received a list of questions generated by a model that had no access to the referenced internal documents or the organizational context, and raised that output verbatim as a professional review.


The LLM did not know that the metrics were being pulled from existing tracking sheets. It did not know that the tools were already described in referenced policy documents. It did not know the organizational context behind each objective. So, it raised queries. And the auditor, without reading the document carefully or applying professional judgment, sent those queries to the client.


The consequence was not trivial. This caused a direct delay in the client's certification timeline. For a client who had invested months in ISMS implementation, who had resolved their non-conformance correctly and in good faith, and who was waiting for closure, that delay had real operational implications.

This is what happens when a professional outsources their thinking to an LLM without contextualizing the output. The AI did not make an error in the way machines make errors. It simply did not have the context to give a complete answer. The error was in treating the model's output as a substitute for professional review rather than a starting point for it.


What These Real Case Studies Reveal About Learning Cybersecurity with AI


Whether it is a student pasting scan results into ChatGPT or a professional feeding a compliance document into an LLM and raising the output as audit queries, the underlying behavior is the same: delegating judgment to a tool without verifying whether the tool had the information and context needed to exercise that judgment accurately.


In cybersecurity and GRC, judgment is not a luxury. It is the core deliverable. A penetration tester's value is not in running tools. It is in understanding what the findings mean, why they matter, how they chain together, and what a specific client needs to do about them. An auditor's value is not in generating a list of questions. It is in reading evidence carefully, applying the standard with precision, and making a defensible determination based on what is actually in front of them.

When that judgment is outsourced without validation, the professional becomes a relay between a client and a model, and the client bears the cost of whatever the model gets wrong.


The False Sense of Readiness in the Job Market

For students, this behavior creates a particularly dangerous outcome: a false sense of readiness. Students who have learned primarily through AI-generated outputs often enter the job market believing they are prepared, because their reports, writeups, and project submissions looked prepared.

But in an actual role, the expectations are different:

  • A vulnerability management analyst is expected to read CVE advisories, understand affected components, and prioritize findings based on environmental context, not relay tool output through a chatbot

  • A SOC analyst is expected to trace event chains, understand attacker behavior, and explain detections, not summarize alerts via a language model

  • A penetration tester is expected to explain every finding technically and in business terms, justify severity, and guide remediation, not produce AI-narrated tool reports

  • A GRC professional, including an ISMS auditor, is expected to read evidence carefully, apply the standard with expertise, and raise only substantive, context-aware queries, not generate question lists from a prompt

The skills gap here is not about knowing which tools exist. It is about the ability to think, reason under uncertainty, explain conclusions, adapt when something unexpected happens, and take professional responsibility for the output. Those skills cannot be built by using AI as a replacement for engagement. They are built through practice, feedback, failure, and reflection.


What AI Should Actually Be Used For

When it comes to learning cybersecurity with AI, the tool itself is not the problem — how it is used is. AI is a legitimate learning and productivity accelerator, and professionals who know how to use it well will be faster and more effective. The key distinction is: AI as a support tool versus AI as a replacement for thinking.

The right way to use AI in cybersecurity and GRC work is:

  • Use it to simplify a concept you have already attempted to understand from a primary source

  • Use it to quiz yourself and verify whether you can explain something in your own words

  • Use it to generate draft structures that you then review, verify, and rewrite with domain knowledge

  • Use it to get unstuck when you have already attempted to resolve something independently

  • Always validate its output against the actual source material, documentation, or organizational context before acting on it

The wrong way is to feed a document, a scan result, or a compliance output into a prompt and treat the response as professional judgment.


A Better Standard for Learners and Professionals

For students: use a structured learning path as your backbone. Let AI support your understanding, not replace it. If you cannot explain a finding without reading from a screen, reproduce a result independently, and answer follow-up questions on the spot, you have not finished learning it yet.

For professionals: AI is not a reviewer, an auditor, or an analyst. It is a tool with no access to your client's internal systems, no professional accountability, and no ability to contextualize information it has not been given. Using it as a proxy for your professional judgment does not just affect your credibility. It affects your clients, and in regulated environments, it can affect their compliance status, timelines, and business continuity.

The standard in both cases is the same: own your output. Understand what you are submitting, why it is correct, and how you would defend it if someone asked you to explain it without any assistance.


Closing Thought

Cybersecurity and information security governance are fields where false confidence is not just a career problem. It is a risk to the clients, organizations, and systems that professionals are trusted to protect. A student who learns to produce reports without genuine understanding will eventually be trusted with real systems and real consequences. A professional who delegates review to an LLM without validation will eventually raise the wrong query at the wrong time, and someone else will pay the price.

The goal of learning and practicing in this field is not to produce outputs that look right. It is to develop the judgment to know when something is right, why it is right, and what to do when it is not. No AI shortcut gets you there. Only honest, structured, validated engagement with the material does.


The real case studies shared here are a reminder that learning cybersecurity with AI is only effective when the learner remains the one doing the actual thinking.
